Leave the Penny

“The Penny Debate” by Brad Andrews is an article that describes both sides of the current argument about whether or not to eliminate the penny so that people will be more informed about the issue. Even though there are good points on either side, I think we should get rid of the penny because people do not even consider it as money anymore. My parents own a store in San Diego where they keep a small tray by the register for people to either leave a penny or take a penny if they need it, and everyone always leaves their pennies. When I would work there after school, it seems like I always ended up with more pennies than I started with because nobody wanted them. I also don’t think that the Treasury would have to make more of the nickel if the penny went away because more and more people are using debit cards for everything they buy. Mr. Andrews states at the end of his article that most Americans want to keep the penny, but I think if more people worked at cash registers in shops and stores, they would see that penny is more of a hassle than it’s worth.
